UK Reflux Interest Group Meeting 2015

Leading specialists gathered in Windsor last week at the Annual Meeting of the UK Reflux Interest Group. Saj Wajed chaired the discussions which included the current experience of the LINX system and the relationship of reflux with functional gut problems. The Group agreed to re-convene at the forthcoming DDF meeting in June and aim to help promote better understanding and management of reflux-related disorders in the UK.

Heartburn Cancer Warning

The National “Be Clear on Cancer” Campaign launched today warning about heartburn, a common symptom of reflux, and cancers of the oesophagus and stomach, and urges people to seek specialist medical advice.  A Public Health England  survey reveals that only half of those suffering with persistent heartburn actually see a doctor. The UK has one of the highest incidences of oesophageal cancer in the Europe. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve outcomes and prognosis.

Anti-Reflux Surgery in Young Adults with Disabilities

Saj Wajed Preceptors LINX Surgery in London

Saj Wajed was invited by leading London Upper GI Surgeon Mr Ahmed Ahmed to preceptor him for LINX surgery cases which were carried out last week at Imperial College NHS Trust and the Private Cromwell Hospital in West London. LINX is becoming established as a real alternative to standard management of reflux disease, and the number of implanting centres is steadily  rising, making this option available for more sufferers of this chronic condition in the UK.

Two-years of LINX Surgery for Reflux Disease in Exeter

The Exeter Upper GI Team celebrated the second anniversary of providing LINX surgery for patients suffering with reflux disease. The Unit was one of the first in the UK to offer this service and  have the largest specialist experience in the country. Results so far have been extremely encouraging, and will be presented in detail at the 14th World Congress of the International Society for Disease of the Esophagus (ISDE) in Vancouver, Canada, September 2014.

LINX Preceptorship Meeting

Torax Medical organised a meeting of the leading international surgeons currently performing the LINX procedure. The group included Dr. Thomas Horbach, from Germany, Dr. John Lipham from the United States, and Mr. Saj Wajed from the UK. The meeting was to discuss the finer points of the LINX procedure and discuss how surgeons wishing to offer the LINX procedure should be trained. It was agreed that a programme of Preceptorship would be arranged, where a Preceptor, experienced in the LINX procedure would visit, observe and advise potential Upper GI/Specialist Reflux surgeons to develop a LINX service.
