Stretta for Reflux coming to Exeter

It was a great honour to have  been  invited to visit renowned world expert Professor Luca Dughera at the University of Turin last week and observe him perform endoscopic radiofrequency therapy (Stretta). This is a new option for patients with reflux who do not wish to/are unsuitable for medical or surgical therapy. UK Reflux Interest Group Meeting 2015

Leading specialists gathered in Windsor last week at the Annual Meeting of the UK Reflux Interest Group. Saj Wajed chaired the discussions which included the current experience of the LINX system and the relationship of reflux with functional gut problems. The Group agreed to re-convene at the forthcoming DDF meeting in June and aim to help promote better understanding and management of reflux-related disorders in the UK.

Two-years of LINX Surgery for Reflux Disease in Exeter

The Exeter Upper GI Team celebrated the second anniversary of providing LINX surgery for patients suffering with reflux disease. The Unit was one of the first in the UK to offer this service and  have the largest specialist experience in the country. Results so far have been extremely encouraging, and will be presented in detail at the 14th World Congress of the International Society for Disease of the Esophagus (ISDE) in Vancouver, Canada, September 2014.

LINX reflux surgery in Exeter observed by Doncaster team

Mr. Balachandran, Consultant Upper GI Surgeon from Doncaster,  visited Exeter this week to observe  LINX reflux surgery being performed by  Mr. Saj Wajed, with a view to developing this service. Exeter is one of only two implanting centres in the UK where this procedure, for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is available to all patients, NHS or Private.

Hiatus hernia surgery outcomes

The Exeter Upper GI team present their long-term  data for laparoscopic surgery on para-oesophageal hernia (giant hiatus hernia) at the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) International Surgical Congress,  Harrogate, 30 April – 2 May, 2014. Research Fellow, James Brewer will detail the excellent results of surgery on over 130 patients across a 9-year+ period at the specialist centre.

Safety analysis of the LINX device

An analysis of the safety profile of the first 1000 patients worldwide to undergo the LINX reflux management system has now been published in the scientific journal Disease of the Esophagus. The study evaluated detailed, prospectively gathered information from the 82 centres throughout the world, including Exeter, which was the first centre in the UK to offer this through the National Health Service. The results demonstrate excellent results with a very low complication rate of 0.1%. Long term data regarding the efficacy of LINX, have already been published in the New England Journal of Medicine,  and six-year follow-up in the Journal

Saj Wajed Preceptors in Nantes, France

Mr. Saj Wajed visited the Department of Surgery in Nantes Hospital France, to preceptor Dr. Nicolas Regenet, the first surgeon in France to offer the LINX procedure. It is anticipated that this Unit will now be able to establish a formal LINX service, and that other Hospitals throughout France will soon follow suite. Germany and Italy already have a well-established LINX service. Exeter in Devon leads the UK experience.

Exeter Upper GI Team present video of novel LINX procedure at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI), held at the Royal College of Surgeons, London. A DVD entitled “Laparoscopic Magnetic Bead Augmentation of the Lower Oesophageal Sphincter (LINXTM) for Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease”(Chan KE, Brewer JO, Wajed SA) was one of only five video selected for presentation the Scientific Session of the ALSGBI meeting held in London on the 14th -15th of November 2013. European LINX Users Group and Reflux Meeting, Hamburg Germany

Mr. Saj Wajed attended and chaired one of the sessions of the European LINX Users Groups meeting in Hamburg, Germany, 17th-18th October 2013. The Meeting was hosted by Professors Schopmann and Reigler and attended by Surgeons and Gastro-enterologists from throughout Europe with a special interest in Reflux Disease. Dr John Lipham, from University of Southern California, Los Angeles was invited as a guest speaker, and shared the current North American experience. He reported that now FDA approval  had been achieved, it was expected that there would be in the order of 1000 LINX  procedures carried out in the United States

Saj Wajed meets the Duke

Mr. Saj Wajed, Consultant Upper GI surgeon at the Royal Devon & Exeter and Nuffield Health, Exeter hospital was invited by SRA Developments to meet HRH the Duke of Kent at the opening of their new Research Suite in Ashburton, Devon. SRA manufacture specialist equipment for keyhole surgery. The Duke and Mr. Wajed had a long discussion about the remarkable advances in keyhole surgery, particularly for Reflux Disease, and how innovation in industry had facilitated this.
