Stretta for Reflux coming to Exeter

It was a great honour to have  been  invited to visit renowned world expert Professor Luca Dughera at the University of Turin last week and observe him perform endoscopic radiofrequency therapy (Stretta). This is a new option for patients with reflux who do not wish to/are unsuitable for medical or surgical therapy. Congratulations to Mr Chinthaka Wijesurendere who recently completed the second-year of the Royal College of Surgeons International Surgical Training Fellowship with the Upper GI Team in Exeter. Mr Wijesurendere (pictured here to the left of  Clare Marx, PRCS)  has now returned to his native Sri Lanka, where his Exeter experience of advanced laparoscopic reflux and complex Upper GI surgery will enable him to pioneer specialised services in this field.

Advances in Clinical Measurement of Gastrointestinal Motility and Function

Exeter Upper GI Surgeon Mr Saj Wajed and Clinical Scientist Theresa Royles were amongst some 180 specialists attending the International Congress for Advances in Clinical Measurement of Gastrointestinal Motility and Function held in Ascona, Switzerland. Considerable progress has been made in the understanding of complex motility disorders involving pharyngeal, laryngeal, oesophageal and gastric function. The use and interpretation of advanced investigations including high resolution manometry, impedance and wireless pH monitoring, all of which are available in Exeter, are essential in being able to establish a diagnosis and optimise management of these challenging conditions.

UK Reflux Interest Group Meeting 2015

Leading specialists gathered in Windsor last week at the Annual Meeting of the UK Reflux Interest Group. Saj Wajed chaired the discussions which included the current experience of the LINX system and the relationship of reflux with functional gut problems. The Group agreed to re-convene at the forthcoming DDF meeting in June and aim to help promote better understanding and management of reflux-related disorders in the UK.
