Keyhole Surgery

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY KEYHOLE SURGERY?

Keyhole surgery utilises minimally invasive techniques to treat upper gastro-intestinal diseases and general surgical problems, and when applied to abdominal conditions is referred to as laparoscopic surgery.

HOW IS IT DONE?

Procedures are carried out by first making a small (about 1cm) incision in the abdomen, following which a special device, referred to as a port is positioned. Carbon dioxide gas is gently insufflated through the port, and with the help of muscle relaxant administered as part of the general anaesthetic, a working space is created.

Utilising advanced medical technology, a special camera is inserted through the port and inside the abdomen. This provides a high-definition and magnified view on a large screen. Further ports (usually 0.5cm) are then placed so precision instruments can be used to carry out a wide range of surgical procedures.

WHAT KIND OF OPERATIONS CAN BE PERFORMED?

Laparoscopic procedures are performed now for almost all abdominal conditions and have emerged as the gold-standard of care for the majority. It is particularly valuable in the management of reflux disease (LINX procedure, fundoplication), gallstones (laparoscopic cholecystectomy), abdominal wall hernias (laparoscopic hernia repair), hiatus hernia (laparoscopic para-oesophageal hernia repair) and achalasia (laparoscopic myotomy).

It is now also routinely used in abdominal emergency surgery, and is very useful sometimes in making a diagnosis of a condition by simply looking inside (laparoscopy).

Our patients say . . .

After nearly four years of pain and sickness every time I ate or drank, I can now do both normally without any sign of pain or sickness at all. It has made a tremendous difference to my life.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Large incisions of traditional open surgery, associated with pain and scarring are avoided. Consequently, recovery is much faster and return to normal activities and restoration of quality of life much quicker.

Following surgery, you can get back on track to enjoying a healthier, balanced diet and active lifestyle and enhance your quality of life and wellbeing.
