WHAT DO WE MEAN BY KEYHOLE SURGERY?
Keyhole surgery utilises minimally invasive techniques to treat upper gastro-intestinal diseases and general surgical problems, and when applied to abdominal conditions is referred to as laparoscopic surgery.
HOW IS IT DONE?
Procedures are carried out by first making a small (about 1cm) incision in the abdomen, following which a special device, referred to as a port is positioned. Carbon dioxide gas is gently insufflated through the port, and with the help of muscle relaxant administered as part of the general anaesthetic, a working space is created.
Utilising advanced medical technology, a special camera is inserted through the port and inside the abdomen. This provides a high-definition and magnified view on a large screen. Further ports (usually 0.5cm) are then placed so precision instruments can be used to carry out a wide range of surgical procedures.
WHAT KIND OF OPERATIONS CAN BE PERFORMED?
Laparoscopic procedures are performed now for almost all abdominal conditions and have emerged as the gold-standard of care for the majority. It is particularly valuable in the management of reflux disease (LINX procedure, fundoplication), gallstones (laparoscopic cholecystectomy), abdominal wall hernias (laparoscopic hernia repair), hiatus hernia (laparoscopic para-oesophageal hernia repair) and achalasia (laparoscopic myotomy).
It is now also routinely used in abdominal emergency surgery, and is very useful sometimes in making a diagnosis of a condition by simply looking inside (laparoscopy).
Our patients say . . .
After nearly four years of pain and sickness every time I ate or drank, I can now do both normally without any sign of pain or sickness at all. It has made a tremendous difference to my life.
Following my Heller Cardiomyotomy I am pleased to tell you that at this moment it would appear to be 100% successful. It is no exaggeration to say it has transformed my life.
I appreciated the kindly and sensitive way you receive me and conducted the consultation.
Many thanks for all your care, kindness and attention during my recent gallbladder problems.
I would just like to say a huge thank you for the exceptional support I received from you. I’m happy to say I am eating normally again and am totally reflux free. Keep on doing the wonderful job you do.
Thank you so much for giving me back the enjoyment of eating and drinking everything again. For so long my acid reflux has dominated my life, making it rather miserable at times but since my operation I am one hundred per cent better and can’t believe the difference it has made, it’s just wonderful.

Thank you very much for operating on my father. Your skills have made a huge impact on Dad and he is visibly much better with his rosy cheeks returning to his face. He is now able to enjoy his farmhouse dinners, much to all our pleasure.
Thank you so very much. Not to be refluxing, having a sore throat and cough and to be able to sleep lying down is wonderful and has given me back a normal life.
I have no acid reflux problems and it has made such a difference for my lifestyle. Thank you very, very much for all that you have done for me.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Large incisions of traditional open surgery, associated with pain and scarring are avoided. Consequently, recovery is much faster and return to normal activities and restoration of quality of life much quicker.
- Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery effectively treats reflux symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation, avoids the long-term use of anti-acid medications and prevents further damage to the oesophagus
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones and gallbladder disease relieves painful symptoms arising from cholecystitis, biliary colic and prevents serious gallstone-related complications such as pancreatitis.
- Laparoscopic repair of abdominal wall hernias and can result in a more rapid return to normal activities including sports and fitness
- Laparoscopic surgery can be also used to repair hiatus hernias, restoring normal anatomy and improving symptoms almost immediately
- Laparosopic myotomy improves swallowing in achalasia.
Following surgery, you can get back on track to enjoying a healthier, balanced diet and active lifestyle and enhance your quality of life and wellbeing.
