SPECIALIST MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TEAM
Diagnosis and management of Reflux and other Upper Gastro-Intestinal conditions can be complex, and frequently requires the support of specialists with different areas of expertise. This approach is often referred to as a multi-disciplinary approach, and ensures that everyone receives the very best care and support.
A weekly Complex Benign Oesophago-Gastric multi-disciplinary team meeting is held weekly at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital where challenging cases are discussed with a panel of experts to formulate consensus views and recommendations.
South West Reflux work in close collaboration with experts in the field, both regionally and nationally, and are part of a network of internationally renowned specialist consultants.

Dr Anthony Hobson: Consultant Clinical Scientist & Director of Functional Gut Clinic
Dr Hobson is an internationally renowned Consultant Clinical Scientist with experience across the NHS and private healthcare sectors as well as in academia and the pharmaceutical industry. Anthony trained in Manchester and gained a broad base of experience in assessing gut function from ‘top to bottom’ covering areas such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), incontinence and constipation.
He is Clinical Director of the Functional Gut Clinic London which now provides a specialist private service at Nuffield Health Exeter, offering the full spectrum of advanced GI diagnostics.
Dr Tariq Ahmad: Consultant Gastroenterologist
Dr Ahmad qualified from Bristol University in 1992 and has been a Consultant in Exeter since 2007, having trained at Oxford from where he was awarded a D Phil in 2003 for research into genetics of inflammatory bowel disease, an area of study which he continues in Exeter. He specialises in complex gastro-intestinal conditions and consults from Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital.
Dr John Christie: Consultant Gastroenterologist
Dr Christie is a Consultant Gastroenterologist practicing at Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust. Dr Christie qualified in 1989 and trained in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Bristol, then Oxford. He also worked for a year on the liver transplant unit in Melbourne, Australia and has been a Consultant in Exeter for many years.
Beth Thompson: Dietician
Beth Thompson is a specialist Dietician at the Royal Devon and Exeter and works in close conjunction with the Gastroenterology team. She offers private consultations from Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital.

Theresa Royles: GI Clinical Scientist
Theresa Royles is specialist GI Clinical Scientist at the Royal Devon and Exeter and leads the Oesophageal Physiology Service including the private wireless pH Studies.
